PHMS Orchestra

The Pittsburgh Historical Music Society orchestra grew out of the Old Economy Village 1825 orchestra. The OEV Orchestra interprets performances given by the actual Harmonist orchestra that existed in the 1820's. The music peformed by the ensemble is taken from the OEV archives. As the ensemble grew in size and musicianship, some of the members expressed and interesting in exploring areas of late 18th and 19th century orchestra music that are beyond the scope of the OEV Orchestra, and the idea for the PHMS was born.

The PHMS Orchestra consists of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, wooden flutes having between one and eight keys, boxwood C five key clarinets, heckel bassoons, natural horns, natural trumpets, and drum. In the very near future we hope to add classical oboes.

The orchestra rehearses on the third Sunday of the month from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the Depreciation Lands Museum in Allison Park, PA. The

DLM has been very supportive to our orchestra - they have our undying gratitude! We are currently seeking venues for concerts in the 2010 - 2011 season. Please contact us if you are planning an event and are interested in hiring the orchestra!
